Performing Arts – Music
Overview
Performing Arts plays a significant part in the educational experience of learners at Birchwood. There is a varied curriculum covering the three disciplines of music, drama and dance as well as a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities. Performances by learners form a significant contribution to events such as end of term assemblies, open evenings and community events to name but a few.
Our modern Performing Arts Centre consists of two drama spaces with a partition wall that opens to make one large theatre, a dance studio, 3 general classrooms, 2 music classrooms, 2 practice rooms and a recording room.

Learning at Key Stage 4
Music continues to be a mainly practical subject at GCSE and is an extension of the music studied at Key Stage 3. The emphasis is on the learner’s ability to perform, compose and listen to music of all styles.
The course is designed so that learners of all abilities may participate at their own level using their preferred instrument or their voice. It is vital that they strive to improve the standard of their performance over the two years as this provides the ‘backbone’ of the course. The keyboard skills and an understanding of chords gained in lower school continue to be used as an aid to composition.
